6/15 Weekly Update

Dear NCHS Family,

This will be our last regular edition of the Weekly Update for the 2017-2018 school year. We are proud of another great year of learning and wish all families a wonderful summer!

Good luck on the exams, which begin today, click on this link to see the schedule.

Wellness and Enrichment:

Back by popular demand! After a successful launch during midterms, NCHS will once again be offering Wellness-Enrichment activities for students and staff to destress, refocus, and maximize their performance (and fun) during the finals testing period. The full menu of offerings will be included next week, but the NCHS community can look forward to seeing yoga, walking, recreational activities, quiet study areas, and everyone’s favorite - the friendly dogs! Thanks to everyone involved in planning and coordinating these activities for all.

Please click here to see all of the activities.

If the weather is uncooperative for scheduled outdoor activities, the auxiliary gym will be used as a backup.

English:

This past week the English Department descended upon Waveny to score our 9th and 10th grade portfolios. Over the course of 2 days (and beyond), the teams reviewed nearly 8000 pages of student writing! The team was impressed at the level of commitment our students have to the revision process. Below are a few pictures of teachers huddled over their laptops.

Exams are approaching and the year is finally winding down. Students are busily preparing and teachers are furiously grading. The end is in sight!

Athletics:

Congratulations to the NCHS Girls Lacrosse Team (and coaches) for winning the Class L State Championship beating Ridgefield 19-7! Way to go Lady Rams!!!!!!

Career & Technical Education:

Family and Consumer Sciences: This week in the Foods & Nutrition class students had the opportunity to cook up some of our favorite recipes. Students whisked up coffee cake crumble or chocolate chip muffins and some quick and tasty pasta dishes: lo mein and alfredo. The Art of Bread Making class put some serious time in the labs baking their final breads. Each student constructed beautiful challah breads or pizza buns consistent in shape and size…. It has been a wonderful year in the Culinary classroom @ NCHS; I can’t wait to hear about all the cooking that goes on this summer by my amazing students!

Students in the Baking & Pastry Art course wrapped up the semester with a Cupcake War competition and prepared laminated dough into Palmiers.

Technology Education:

TV Broadcasting: NCTV had their final live broadcast of the year which featured some of next year’s anchors. It was the first broadcast without seniors and the crew did a wonderful job! If you missed the live show, you can watch it here.

Student are now busy preparing for graduation, which will be streamed live on Thursday, June 21st at 5PM (live link to come). Also, anyone looking to purchase a copy of this year’s graduation ceremony can pre-order them now by clicking on the following link.

Graphics: After designing custom t-shirts (group photo of final shirts), students have been busy the past few weeks designing a personal logo for themselves. First, they produced a design brief of all things that are important to them. They then used that information to sketch several different ideas on paper. Afterwards, they scanned their final, detailed sketch onto the computer and used InDesign to create their logo.

In Mr. Zambarano’s Woodworking class Students finished their final projects.

Science:

Earth Science students completed a unit on astronomy. Students made scale models of the solar system; they are shown making calculations for their model here:

As part of this unit, students also created travel brochures promoting travel to another planet or moon in our solar system, and they described the aliens that might possibly live there!

Honors Biology students study animal behavior with choice chambers and pill bugs.

AP Bio students use biotechnology while studying proteomics. They used muscle tissue from terrestrial and aquatic organisms.

Physics students completed a unit on optics, during which they studied reflection using mirrors and refraction using lenses.

Physics students completed the semester with a project / presentation on a topic of their choice. They related concepts covered in the course to their area of interest.

Members of the NCHS Concert Choir performed last Sunday evening at the Arts for Healing Benefit Concert at Waveny’s Carriage Barn. Arts for Healing is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing creative arts therapies - music, art, theater, dance/movement - for individuals with emotional, physical, developmental, communication and social needs throughout their lives. Students collaborated with Eytan Nisinzweig, a 32-year-old pianist with autism to perform Elton John’s Your Song and The Beatles Let It Be. Choral students created their own arrangements of the pieces and performed in the concert alongside professional musicians and students of Arts for Healing.

Congratulations to the performers for giving your talent, time and service to our New Canaan community!

PHOTOGRAPHY FINAL BOOKS ARE IN THE WORKS!!

Students in the introduction to digital photography classes are busy in the Lab 238 workshop building their personalized photo books. Each student chose their own personal topic, theme, style or photography technique to explore with their camera. With the help of Adobe Photoshop, their photos are then transformed into beautiful 4x6 prints, each having a special place in their handmade accordion books!
