Opening Week Update - Weekly Update



Dear NCHS Family,

Welcome Back!!! New Canaan High School students came back to school with so much enthusiasm. The Class of 2022 was welcomed into the school and we look to the Class of 2019 to become positive leaders for other classes around the school.

This week the administration and support staff met with each of the classes to welcome them back into the school.  We also visited all of the classrooms. Students seemed excited and ready to tackle the new year.

We held class meetings for all grades and have addressed appropriateness of decorations on seniors’ cars. Please support us and take a look at your child’s car to ensure there is nothing inappropriate or offensive written on the car. While we love school spirit, we want to make sure that we do not offend anyone.

New Canaan High School will continue to communicate regularly with all stakeholders through a variety of different mediums. We will still continue to publish our Weekly Update, and have an active twitter feed. In addition, we will continue to have daily announcements posted on the TV’s at school and on the website. We are continuing to look for ways to celebrate NCHS!

Open House:

The date for NCHS Open House/Freshman Parent Orientation is Thursday, September 13.

Freshman Parent Orientation starts at 6:30 pm followed by Open House for all grades - arrival at 7:00 pm, class visit schedule starts promptly at 7:15 pm

Afternoon Food Service:

Our afternoon food service in the cafeteria begins today, from 1:00 - 3:00 daily, which features beverages and grab and go snacks such as sandwiches, hot pretzels, yogurt and fruit cups, and protein bars.

Uber

Each year we send out Important Information Regarding Uber Transportation:(During the School Day)

Some of our students have called Uber in the past to transport them from campus into town or home during the school day. We are concerned about students using this service during school hours for a variety of reasons including:

· no parental permission has been explicitly given for this driver to transport a student.

· neither the school nor parents have any way of knowing the qualifications/background of any Uber driver.

· transporting anyone under 18 without an accompanying adult is a violation of Uber’s own policies.

When we have become aware of a student attempting to leave campus in an Uber, we have intervened and will continue to do so, but unlike taxis, most Uber cars are indistinguishable from other traffic entering or exiting campus. We have reached out to Uber in an attempt to discourage drivers from picking up students at school, but the service views each driver as an independent contractor who makes his/her decision about taking on customers.

Please talk to your child to reinforce their adherence to rules regarding off-campus privileges and to help us discourage use of this service during the school day.

Dear NCHS Family, A School-Wide Picnic will be held on Monday, May 21 for students and staff that would like to attend. We will not have a rain date, so let’s hope for a sunny day. Students will be able to buy lunch and will have about 90 minutes to celebrate the year with their classmates. The schedule for the day can be found here. The NC Color Run was a tremendous success. Almost 900 people came out to run in the event. The proceeds benefit the Scholarship Foundation. For pictures from the NC Color Run, click here. 4/5 Weekly Update

Dear NCHS Family, I hope that everyone enjoys the well-deserved break and that you all have the opportunity to spend time with family and friends. This should be a homework free week so that students have time to rest, de-stress and recharge.  Some classes preparing for AP exams might have some work, but that should be the exception and not the rule. Hackathon: A dozen NCHS students participated in the 2nd Annual HACKATHON, held in the Wagner Room on Tuesday, April 3. The brainchild of senior Thomas Freiberg, students worked in teams on self-designed coding or robotics projects. Two students spent the day learning Ableton, a digital audio workstation designed to create music, and the Push, the launchpad instrument that supports Ableton. They will be spending their internship with Mrs. Moody teaching the Ableton to the Advanced Music Tech classes. Throughout the day, speakers from various digital and information technology fields shared their experiences and insights with the group.

5/25 Weekly Update

Dear NCHS Family, School Picnic: On Monday, New Canaan High School gathered for an all school picnic. The entire school community had a great time. It was an opportunity to celebrate what has been a wonderful school year. Governor’s Scholar: Mr. Gusitsch had the opportunity to attend the Governor’s Scholar Luncheon at the Aqua Turf. The program recognizes academically talented Grade Eleven students throughout the state. A junior must be in the top 5% of their class and then they must be selected from a field of over 150 entries. A committee reviews the candidates academic record, standardized test results and an essay they must complete. Conor West was one of 22 Governor’s Scholars that were chosen. Congratulations to Conor and the entire community for having a Governor’s Scholar chosen. We have been fortunate to have a Governor’s Scholar each of the years that I have been here (and year’s before.) This is a celebration of the academic strength of the community. Congratulations
