Weekly Update 2/16

Dear NCHS Family,

Tech Night

New Canaan Public School’s 11th Annual Tech Night is once again bringing together students and technology! We invite all students to take part in this special event on Wednesday, April 5th from 6:30-8:00pm at New Canaan High School.

Tech Night is an opportunity for students from grades K-12 to demonstrate scientific investigations that they have created inside and outside of the classroom that show exceptional uses of technology with members of the New Canaan Community. For more information about tech night, click here.

Homework over Break

The staff met this week and decided to make some changes regarding homework over school breaks.  There will not be any assignments due upon return from break (at least for two days) nor will there be any tests. The hope is that families can spend more meaningful time together and that students are not focused on their work.

Our college level courses may require additional work depending on the pace and time of the year.  Also, if study guides or other work has been assigned over an extended time period students might want to take this opportunity to complete the work.

This respite does not preclude students from using the time to catch up or get ahead on some work. It is merely trying to put the focus on where it should be during a break, with family.

Be well and stay healthy NCHS!

Bill Egan

Department News:

English Department News:  This week in the English Department, students in Mr. Remley’s 10th grade class began their unit on Lord of the Flies by watching a short documentary on Stanley Milgram’s famous social psychology  experiment regarding obedience to authority.  Students in Ms. Deiana’s 10th grade class are finishing their op-eds and beginning Lord of the Flies as well.  Meanwhile in Mr. McAteer’s 110th grade class students are beginning a collaborative video research project in which they will select a current issue and investigate facts and perspectives and incorporate these into an original video.  Finally, the 9th grade team is busy preparing and administering their second reading benchmark of the year.

Math Department News:  Approximately 120 students participated in the American Mathematics Competition on February 7.  We look forward to finding out how our students fared against other students across the country!

NCHS has entered two teams in Moody's Mega Math Challenge. Team members include seniors Andrew Shizari, Bhaskar Abhiraman, Tyler Hill, Faustino Cortina, and Jake Grigsby and juniors Jai Ansh, Sam Havard, Max Koschnitzke, and Alex Popov. To complete the challenge, teams will spend 14 hours together during the weekend of February 24 creating and explaining a mathematical model in response to a real world problem. Problems in recent years dealt with ride sharing and the cost of higher education. Teams compete for scholarship prizes of up to $20,000. For more information on the challenge, go to https://m3challenge.siam.org/challenge/about. Good luck to our teams!

Algebra 1 classes created study guides for a quiz on exponential growth and decay and they used as these study guides as additional review for the class.

In AP Calculus AB, students used Geometer's Sketchpad and Calculus in Motion to visualize solids created by rotating a curve around a line or with perpendicular cross sectional areas. They then calculated the volume of the solids.

In M4 Algebra 2, students used graphing software like Desmos or Geogebra to create Valentine's Day cards after their Logarithm quiz (see below).

CTE Department News:

This week in Ms. Zilly's Foods & Nutrition class the students are finishing up the quick breads unit while getting in the holiday spirit. Students made delicious chocolate chip muffins that they gave away as random acts of kindness! Happy Valentines!

Students in Miss Martinich's Business Principles classes just finished up researching their "Dream Careers." This week students gave presentations on their selected careers. They spoke about duties the job entails as well as what type of education or training they would need to enter the field. They used the Bureau of Labor Statistics website to research prospective wages for their chosen career as well as the outlook for the job over the next 10 years. Many found that the jobs they were interested in were actually on the rise! They researched the potential work environment for the career (office/travel/etc) as well as the type of schedule/work day hours they would have and spoke of how that would affect their future-self's well-being. Over the 2 classes there were not many repeat careers so students learned about many different occupations.

The Vex Robotics Team will be competing this weekend at UNH. This will be their last chance to qualify for the Northeast Regionals. The Team has had two weeks to improve their robot and they feel confident their changes will put them in contention for one of 8 spots left. Here are some pictures from the Choate competition.

World Language Department News:

Approximately fifty  Latin students  went on the annual visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art at the beginning of this month. The goal of their trip was to look at some of the treasures featured in the spectacular  Roman Galleries, which comprises the largest body of Roman art outside Italy. As an extension of this exploration,  Mrs. Corona’s students will create an art gallery in the hallway adjacent to the Latin classrooms featuring the art pieces they found the most striking and at the same time connected to the readings they’ve been doing this year in  class.
