Safe Driving Week was a tremendous success at NCHS.  A special thank you to the PFA for setting up the week. The kids had a great deal of fun and hopefully learned about the importance of safe driving.

NCHS Career Night:(Tuesday March 14th)

This Tuesday, March 14th is Career Night.  Held every two years with close to 500 students attending each time, this student-only night will educate our kids about a wide variety of careers. We will have approximately 75 professionals meeting with students in classroom-style discussions explaining what they do, what they like about their jobs, and how they can prepare for careers post high school and college. Students can select two fields from the 25 sessions offered; each will feature a short presentation by three speakers working in that field followed by questions and answers. This evening brings a community of professionals together to provide an invaluable opportunity for our students. Thank you to the PFA for making this night possible for our children!

We hope you will encourage your children to attend!

Be well and stay healthy NCHS!

Bill Egan

Department News:

English Department News:
It has been a busy week in the English department as students and teachers find themselves already past mid-quarter!  This past week, the English department, along with the rest of the NCHS community, welcomed 8th grade parents and students to the high school.  Participants got to hear about the English department's various programs, and about the upcoming author visit with Conor Grennan.

Last week Ms. Hamill and Ms. Weeks took some of their 11th and 12th grade classes on a field trip to “I am Not Your Negro”, a documentary film in limited release directed by Raoul Peck and based on a manuscript by James Baldwin.  Afterwards, as a  supplemental experience students visited the Yale University Art Gallery where a collection of Lee Freidlander’s photography titled “Let Us March On” is on exhibit, among other contemporary art. A few photos from the excursion:

CTE Department News:
This week in Ms. Zilly's Foods & Nutrition class the students are finishing up the Yeast Bread unit. It's a long process but it's definitely worth the wait. Check out their fresh, hot pizzas and gooey cinnamon rolls. Delish!

Mrs. Sapienza's Baking & Pastry Art class are using eggs to leaven cakes. Students are enjoying the angel food cake they prepared in class by incorporating meringue into a flour mixture.

Mrs. O'Connor's Civil Engineering & Architecture course is concluding their Affordable Housing project which includes following Habitat for Humanity and LEED regulations  to create an efficient and affordable home. They will be presenting their projects this week and begin their Commercial Renovations Project.

In Child Development classes students prepared and taught lessons for Dr. Seuss Day, Picnic Day, and Animals.

Mrs. O'Connor's 3D Animation course is creating their Stop Motion project. They are building and setting up their scenes to photograph and then uploading them to the computers to animate.

Mrs. O'Connor's Woodworking class is learning how to use all the different hand tools through their Scrap Wood Sculpture project.  This is where they use scrap wood in the class and create something unique to get them ready for their C02 Dragster project

VPA News:
New Canaan High School Theatre program’s upcoming production is “The Will Rogers Follies, A Life In Revue”.  The music is composed and arranged by Cy Coleman with lyrics by Betty Comden & Adolph Green.  This wonderfully entertaining musical showcases the life of the legendary cowboy, entertainer and American folk hero, Will Rogers.  Will’s story comes to life with a series of Follies-like production numbers featuring everything from beautiful tap dancing showgirls to rope twirling cowboys.  Please join us for an evening of entertainment that the whole family will enjoy on March 17 @ 7pm and March 18 @ 2pm & 7pm, with a scheduled snow date of March 20th @ 7pm in the case of inclement weather. Ticket prices are $18 for orchestra seating and $15 for mezzanine seating. Tickets are available at www.newcanaanhighschooltheatre.com.

Math Department News:
M4 Algebra 2 students will be starting their "Case of the Cooling Corpse" projects this weekend. They will read an unfinished synopsis of a Sherlock Holmes story, use Newton's Law of Cooling to determine who the murderer is and then write the conclusion of the story.

As we start out in statistics unit, in M4 Algebra 2, we are trying to incorporate as much real world data as possible. Students arranged themselves in order by height in order to calculate what percentile of the class they were in for height.
