Weekly Update 11/17

Dear NCHS Family,

Tri-State Visit:

For the last three days we have hosted a team of educators from the following communities: Mamaroneck, Ridgefield, Briarcliff, Madison, Dobbs Ferry, Easton, Scarsdale, Southampton, Westport, Wilton, Weston and Scotch Plains-Fanwood, NJ. Most of their time was spent in schools observing classes, meeting with students, interviewing parents and talking with teachers and administrators. The team LOVED our students, and was very impressed by all that our educators are doing to help them to grow socially, emotionally and academically. We are immensely proud of New Canaan High School and are fully committed to continuous improvement.  We look forward to learning about the results of the visit.

Kids In Crisis:

Samantha Wynn is our new Teen Talk Kids in Crisis Counselor.  A native New Yorker, Sam comes to us most recently from Delaware with a wealth of experience that has included working within government agencies, the Anti-Defamation League and  therapeutic settings serving adolescents. She is excited to join NCHS and is already building partnerships with community agencies so that she can help students and families access crucial resources. Her office is across from school nursing, and she looks forward to getting to know and working with NCHS families.

Weekly Update:

There will be no Weekly Update next week.  I hope that you all enjoy the time with family and friends.  Our break should be a homework free break and I hope that all have a safe and happy long weekend. Happy Thanksgiving to the entire NCHS Community.

From Officer Lambert:

Please be aware of the sun glare in the morning.  Drive with an abundance of caution and be aware of the pedestrians along with the traffic.  Officer Lambert wants to make sure that we have a safe holiday season where the community can enjoy each other.

Turkey Bowl T-Shirts:

Below is a picture of me wearing my Turkey Bowl T-shirt.  Parents will be back in school on Monday and Tuesday selling shirts. They are amazing as always and cost $15.  Go Rams!!!

Architecture Field Trip:
New Canaan Modern Architects: 50 Years of Achievement 1947-1997
This is the story of 21 extremely talented modern architects who moved to New Canaan and they had one thing in common. Their buildings reflected the times in which they designed and they believed that “good design’ could lead to social change and a better society. Simplicity and functionalism described their work. They were modern architects. Their buildings were houses characterized by flat roofs, honest use of materials, open floor plans, and large glass windows that connected their residents to nature. They were the first architectural environmentalists. The story of their achievements, careers, designs and personal accomplishments is told in 12 displays: models, archival and documentary materials, drawings, original artwork, and personal drafting tools. The centerpiece of the exhibit is a 40-foot timeline with 96 vintage photographs of 67 projects spanning 50 years.
Carriage Barn Arts Center, Waveny Park, Nov 4–26 Hours: Wed–Fri 10-3,  Sat & Sun 9-5

Math:
M1 Integrated Geometry is discovering and utilizing angle relationships when parallel lines are cut by a transversal.  M3 Algebra II is going back to their roots.  The class is simplifying radicals including variables and performing operations with radicals.  M3 Precalculus is beginning to simplify trigonometric identities.  All of a sudden all of the logic and reasoning skills of proofs come back in a different form.

In M4 Precalculus the students will be working in groups of 3 to solve a variety of application problems using vectors.  Then they will create a flowchart on a shared Google Doc that can be used to solve problems using vectors.  All of the students can then use the flowcharts to help them solve the remainder of the application problems.  See below:

CTE:
In Mr. Zambarano’s Yearbook class students are working on senior ads with parents who come in by appointment to create their child's ad. This is truly authentic learning at it’s best, as students get a chance to work with a client to create their ad.

In Mr. Zambarano’s Woodworking class students finalized their hand tool projects and started working on their power tools project. This year students will be making a marquetry project.

Family and Consumer Science:
The Tri-State panel enjoyed a wonderful lunch prepared by Donna Sapienza, Kelly Zilly and 15+ students from multiple sections of Family and Consumer Science classes. All the students volunteered their time to help out.

Advanced TV Broadcasting
Last Friday, in honor of Veteran's Day, NCTV teamed up with US History students to interview local veterans in front of a live studio-audience. In just two periods, TV students created a set with multiple cameras, lights and backdrop. These videos will now be edited and submitted to the Library of Congress for permanent archive. And as usual, NCTV broadcast their weekly live news show, The Morning Announcements, which can be seen here.

Journalism - Students just received new story assignments and are currently working on preliminary research, interviewing sources and creating media plans. You can always read the latest student news on the Courant's website at nchscourant.com

Intro to TV Broadcasting
Students are learning about framing and composition and when to use certain types of shots such as Wide, Close up, Point-of-view, etc.
The lesson ended with students imagining a story which was drawn as a storyboard on the whiteboard. Students will now create their own commercial or PSA that includes many of these different shots.
