Weekly Update 3/9

Dear NCHS Family,

An unexpected, very short week!

When I was a child, I had dreams of being a weatherman. I was talked out of becoming a weatherman and while I certainly love my job, I always loved the weather and was a secret stalker of famous weathermen. Well on Wednesday, I hit the jackpot, I had a chance to take a picture with Jim Cantore from the Weather Channel. I tried not to bother him too much, but I took a selfie and watched him shoot for a bit. The Weather Channel was in Bethel covering the winter storm.

Safe Driving Week is Here! March 12-16!

With a special focus on keeping our teen drivers safe, this week-long initiative will include motivational speakers and daily interactive activities for students along with a very special parent presentation on guiding our teens through the dangers of driving. Please join us and please help us by modeling safe driving habits yourselves – we are powerful role models for our students!

PARENTS
– Join us for a powerful and empowering presentation on keeping our teen drivers safe. You don’t want to miss this compelling event on Thursday, March 15th as CT resident and safe driving advocate Tim Hollister shares his own story of losing his 17-year old son Reid to a single-car accident. This tragedy spurred Tim on to become part of the CT task force that created our graduated teen driving laws. Tim’s presentation goes well beyond the traditional parent lectures that focus on teaching our teens to drive the actual vehicle, without offering a plan to preempt the hazards teen drivers face. Tim will talk about the importance of supervising our teens which is as important to lowering crash rates as teaching teens how to turn at a busy intersection. Parents will learn priceless information about evaluating the circumstances of every driving trip, how to be able to say “no” when necessary, how to prepare a “flight plan” for each drive, creating a safe driving contract, and how to put safety before convenience.

STUDENTS will learn about the 5 riskiest teen driving behaviors: illegal passengers, texting, speeding, alcohol and drugs, the most dangerous time for teens to drive by attending a safe driving presentation, participating in hands-on simulations throughout the week, drive an obstacle course, learn how to reverse-park (for those with a license) with the help of Lewis School of Driving, and get safe driving tips on a daily basis! They won’t miss the signage in school and around the campus either – and hopefully neither will you!

New Canaan High School presents “42nd Street”, a classic and beloved tale. Music is by Harry Warren and lyrics by Al Dubin. This is a show about a show! It tells the story of Peggy Sawyer, played by Grace Rucci, a talented young performer with stars in her eyes who gets her big break on Broadway. Peggy’s talent catches the eye of legendary Broadway director Julian Marsh, played by Logan Otis, who gives her a spot in the chorus of Pretty Lady, his newest show. Pretty Lady stars Dorothy Brock, played by Kaitlyn Piotroski, the classic Broadway diva, who takes an instant dislike to the new girl in the cast. When Dorothy is injured during the show’s previews, Pretty Lady looks like it will have to close, unless a new girl can be found. 42nd Street is full of crowd-pleasing tap dances and show-stopping ensemble production numbers. This show is fun for the whole family. Please join the cast and crew for a night of dazzling entertainment. Performances will be held on March 15 – March 17 @ 7pm at the New Canaan High School Auditorium. All tickets are $15 and $18 and can be purchased online at www.newcanaanhighschooltheatre.com.

This week, Mr. Gusitsch reflects on the latest event from the Avielle Foundation, Brainstorm Experience. The series focuses on brain health and brings in dynamic speakers from across the country. Please feel free to check it out, here.

Math: On March 4, two teams of NCHS students competed against over 1000 other teams across the US in the Math Works Modeling Challenge, formerly known at Moody's Mega Math Challenge. Their task was to create and evaluate three mathematical models: a model that a state could use to feed its food-insecure population using the wasted food generated in that state, a model that could be used to determine the amount of food waste a household generates in a year based on traits and habits, and a model that could be used to provide insight on which strategies a community should adopt to repurpose the maximum amount of food at minimum cost. Members of the junior team were Daniel Lu, Max Plum, Conor West, Natasha Tchir, and Lance Phillips. Members of the senior team were Jai Ansh, Alex Popov, Sam Havard, and Grant Wang.
