Weekly Update 3/23

Dear NCHS Family,

Another wild week of weather at New Canaan High School! Lets hope we finally get into Spring and the snow ends. I am really sick of it. The weather forced a change to the date of the Connecticut SAT. Because of the early dismissal, the Connecticut SAT will now be on April 24th. We will send a revised schedule as the date nears.

Post-Prom Fashion Show
A special thank you to the PFA for producing the Post-Prom Fashion show tonight. I hope that many of you can attend. The proceeds go to Post-prom and support our students. Thank you to everyone who made this event happen.

2nd Annual NCHS HACKATHON

This year's HACKATHON is in the Wagner Room on Tuesday, April 3rd, from 7:30 AM - 4:30 PM. This event will involve students working in teams to create a coding or robotics project, which they will present at the end of the day. Professionals from tech fields will speak at several points throughout the day and judge the projects. This is open to ALL NCHS students.

For further information, contact Mr. Rothman. Individuals and teams are welcome to join the action, whether they are coding or building and programming a robot.

A completed permission slip is all that's needed to register.

Innovation Night:

Formerly known as "Tech Night" we are proud to announce this year's event as the NCPS Innovation Night. This is the 13th year in which the NCPS provides students and educators an opportunity to showcase how their innovations enhance and encourage learning. Innovation is not solely the use of technology, but rather a spark that captures our imagination. Innovation Night is an evening that highlights our sparks, the students, as they demonstrate their innovative projects created outside of school and within their classrooms. Innovation Night will take place on Wednesday, April 4th from 6:30-8:00 PM at New Canaan High School.

Safe Driving Week Follow Up:

Last week, Tim Hollister, an attorney and safety advocate in Connecticut presented to over 50 parents. He has been a rational voice promoting better teen driver education and increased awareness in parents role in keeping their kids safe behind the wheel. Please see the links below.

English:

The Connecticut Writing Project has selected the following students' poems for publication in Connecticut Student Writers magazine:

Hannah Swimm's "Embers of Glory"

Elyssa Grogan's "In the Belly of the Beast"

Their work was chosen from more than 1500 entries from all over the state! Both students will be recognized at the Student Recognition Night on May 10th at the Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Connecticut in Storrs.

Social Studies:

Ms. Browner's Global History I classes participated in a Roman Senate simulation, giving persuasive speeches advocating building a statue to either Julius Caesar or Augustus Caesar in the forum... while properly attired, of course!

Students in AP World History II worked through, analyzing the scramble for Africa as a part of the Imperialism unit.

Johnny Renda won 1st place novice speaker, and with his partner Hannah Suthons won 2nd place novice team in the last CDA regular season debate tournament at Darien. Johnny and Hannah will be competing at States on March 24th.

In Ms. Patrizzi's Global Studies II classes, students are creating comic strips for the different battles of World War I. Each pair is creating a strip that is historically accurate, well researched, and paints a vivid story of what happened throughout the course of their chosen battle. The goal is for each comic strip to educate others about the battles of WWI in a way that is educational, creative and captivating to the audience.

For the second year in a row renowned actor Sam Waterston engaged with students in Mr. Webb's Global II class. The students had seen Mr. Waterstons film The Killing Fields and questioned Mr. Waterston as to his role playing New York Times correspondent Sidney Schaumberg and what it was like to play alongside Haing Ngor is the first (and to date, only) actor of Asian descent to ever win an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Haing Nor was himself prisoner of the Khmer Rouge and compelled to conceal his education, medical skills, and even the fact that he wore glasses to avoid the new regime's intense hostility to intellectuals and professionals. He was expelled from Phnom Penh along with the bulk of its two million inhabitants as part of the Khmer Rouge's social experiment and imprisoned in a concentration camp along with his wife.

And we are excited to share the news that Mr. Webb’s latest book, "Boats Against The Current” comes out May 1 and the documentary Gatsby in Connecticut on PBS this fall. They are commencing a film and literary tour with speaking dates at The Colony Club in NYC, The Ferguson Library in Stamford, Temple University in Philadelphia and Georgetown in D.C."

Math:

The NCHS Math Team qualified for the CSAML, which is the Connecticut state meet, on April 4 at Bristol Eastern High School. The team is looking forward to competing and improving on their performance from last year.

Students in M4 Algebra 2 calculated measures of central tendency and standard deviation on their scores from the AMC test and compared them to national averages and standard deviation.

Vex Robotics

The VEX Robotics team competed at the Southern New England Regional Championship in Worcester, MA on March 3 and 4, 2018. As expected the competition was fierce. After two days of qualifying matches, RamTech’s record was 8 wins, 2 losses, 0 ties, placing them 7th out of 78 teams. During alliance selections, RamTech eventually became the 5th seed going into elimination rounds. After winning their way into the semifinal round, RamTech qualified for the World Championship to be held April 25th-28th in Louisville, Kentucky. The robot the team designed and built was able to quickly retrieve 7” tall cones and stack them to create a 5’ tall monster stack. Then the robot was able to efficiently move the stacks into scoring zones both autonomously and by driver control.
