Weekly Update 5/26

Dear NCHS Family,

Senior Prom:

The Senior prom was wonderful last week.  The students had a great time and were so well behaved. They enjoyed each other and danced the entire time!

Post Prom:

A special thank you to the PFA for putting on Post Prom.  It was a special night and they seemingly get more amazing every year. I know the kids had a wonderful time and I personally enjoyed the virtual reality roller coasters. They scared me, but they were so much fun!

Rising Above Award

Six students were named for a Rising Above Award at a small breakfast. The recipients are nominated by faculty based on the recognition that they have ‘risen above’ a difficult situation, turned things around academically, assisted others in need or put forth extraordinary effort to achieve a goal. The students are: Gwenan Walker, Rachel Annulli, Ben Webster, Ben DeClue, Kylie Shaffer and Derek Perone. Congratulations for your contributions to our school community.

Exam Schedule:

Although it has been posted on-line, I thought I would share the link to the exam schedule.

Graduation:

NCHS Graduation is set for Tuesday, June 20 outside at Dunning Stadium at 5:00 pm.
If needed, there will be a rain date on Wednesday, June 21.

As always, thank you for your support!

Be well and stay healthy NCHS!

Bill Egan

Department News:

World Language:
Each year students across the world take the National French, National Latin and National Spanish Exams. Many students use the results of these assessments on their college applications as highlights of their academic performance.  This year over 100 NCHS students received Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in each of these assessments. This is quite a feat and each of them should be extremely proud of their performance. On May 22 we had a ceremony to celebrate these students. Congratulations to each and every one of them.

English Department:
The English department has been up to their ears in portfolios!  This week both the 9th and 10th grade teams are collecting student portfolios for grading. On Wednesday, the 10th grade team sat down and scored over 300 student portfolios (over 3200 pages of student writing for those who are counting!). The 9th grade team followed suit on Thursday. Below is a picture of graded portfolios!   Needless to say, it was a week of hard work for teachers and students. Results should be available on the portal in the next week or two.
Conor Grennan visited NCHS on Friday May 26th.  The local, bestselling author graciously volunteered his time to speak to students  about his experiences working in Nepal and setting up a NGO to help children displaced by war. To learn more about Conor’s NGO, visit the website for Next Generation Nepal.
Here are some pics from the presentation:

Math Department:  Students in M4 Algebra 2 wrote their own permutation and combination problems to help distinguish the difference between the two concepts. After feedback and some editing, they compiled a Google Doc with the problems and answers to provide additional practice for all students.

VPA News:
The New Canaan High School Film Club hosted it's 3rd annual "New Age Film Festival" last night, bringing together over 100 students from 12 local high schools, entering films in 6 different categories. The films were adjudicated by cinematographer, Mike Magilnick, filmmaker/director of the Greenwich International film festival, Kiel Stango, and a freelance animator, George Shermer. Student filmmakers checked in and then walked the red carpet, hosted by Charlie Hane & Jack Dunn. The Wagner Room transformed into a magical space to host the film festival with Annie Minaglia and Bhaskar Abhiraman behind the wheel. Twenty three separate awards were handed out in an Oscar-like style, with winners from all across fairfield county. The entire Red Carpet Event and show were broadcast live on the web by the NCTV broadcasting team, led by Christian Parrot. Overall, it was an amazing evening celebrating the incredible talent of young, aspiring filmmakers.

NCHS Art students' work will be exhibited at the iCreate, Regional High School Art Exhibit at the Bruce Museum.  Over 750 pieces were juried with 40 pieces selected for display that represents thirty regional high schools.   The exhibition runs from June 15th through July 30th. The four works are by Anne Greer,  Maria Fagerstal, Zoe Spencer, and Gwenan Walker.

CTE Department News:

In Mrs. O'Connors basic Woodworking class students have been making their boxes, some students had to make jigs for the cuts they need to make, students also learned how to use the table saw, bandsaw and scroll saw and started their bandsaw projects
