Weekly Update 6/2

Dear NCHS Family,

A special thank you the the teachers that are retiring at NCHS. Joe Ditolla and Joyce Didia have provided a lifetime of exemplary service to students and we wish them continued success as they begin a new life that provides them an opportunity to vacation in September.  Thank you to Rocky DeCarlo (ACES) and Edward Schriffert (language lab) who are also retiring from NCHS. Thank you to Dr. Veronica LeDuc who is retiring this year as an Assistant Principal; Ronnie has been a mentor and a friend to me and her wisdom has helped guide me over the last two years.

I wish all of our retirees a happy and healthy future that is filled with joy and much fun!

Scholar Leader Dinner:

On Wednesday evening we had the privilege of hosting the Fairfield County Scholar Leader Dinner. Every school in the FCIAC was represented by talented students who were great representatives of all our schools.  Dr. LeDuc introduced our student representatives, Baskar Abhiraman and Emma Dahill. As is tradition, the students introduced each other and it was wonderful to hear them speak so eloquently about each other.

Social Studies Department News:

Last Tuesday, the Model United Nations Club organized and ran the annual Sophomore Simulation. More than 150 sophomores participated as delegates and the rest of the 10th grade reported on the proceedings as representatives of a wide variety of world news outlets. Students in this year’s simulations tackled everything from European immigration and terrorism in the European Union to the location of the next World Cup through FIFA. And in historical simulations, students took on roles in the French Revolution and JFK’s cabinet. Below are a series of photographs to give some idea of the kinds of skills in negotiation, presentation, collaboration and leadership on display in this culminating activity for the Global History curriculum (in addition to all the research and construction of position papers leading up to the simulation). The event is an amazing testament to our students’ work and achievements this year. A special thanks is due to Model UN club members and advisors who make the day possible each year.

Ms. Goldhawk and Ms. Greco’s classes teamed up to have Psych and Civics work together on a "Psychology of Politics" project. Presentations of findings have been going great!

Students in AP Psychology have continued their investigation of the impact of smartphone use and social networking apps on health, stress, attention, and socialization. They are presenting findings and developing PSA’s to share with the wider school community.

Dr. Schneider is away scoring AP European History essays at the national reading, where she is learning subtleties about what helps students to succeed. She joins 1,500 teachers and professors from around the country in the best kind of professional development an AP teacher can have.

Science Department News:

Happy June!!  Our Chemistry classes are finishing up their last labs of the year as they wrap on their units on solutions.  Students in Ms. Kemp’s 7th period chemistry class focused their attention on the molarity of Kool Aid Solutions.   The class created a variety of kool aid concentrations to determine the number of moles of Kool aid found within each solution.  They also determined the concentration in Part per Million.  Below are a couple of the students enjoying the “Artificial” fruits of their labor.

Mrs  Smith’s chemistry classes are taking a bit of different look at solutions as they are focusing on the solubility of a solute as temperature changes and then using the collected data to construct a solubility curve of the solution.   This sounds like a next step for Ms. Kemp’s Kool aid crew.

Lastly, we would like to congratulate the winners of our science awards at the Recognition Ceremony today.  They have all shown an incredible dedication and effort and should be applauded vigorously for their achievements.  Congratulations!!

School Counseling News:
The counselors have been meeting with juniors to review the post high school planning process; they are talking to the students about where they are with their plans, what schools they have seen, where they are in the testing process and what things have changed since the last meeting. For many students, they are beginning to get an idea of what they like and are feeling more confident in moving toward the application phase over the summer. Some are beginning to think about essay topics and working on the application after August 1st. Counselors are reviewing the admissions decisions for this year’s seniors in order to update their advice to the juniors about the colleges on their list.
