Weekly Update, 1/6/17

Dear NCHS Family,

I hope that everyone had a great first week back to school and has a wonderful 2017!.
The NCHS Scholarship Foundation is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year!  As you may have heard, changes have been made to this year’s annual fundraiser; students will no longer be going door to door asking for donations, but instead may participate this April in the NC Color Run which will benefit the NCSF.  In addition to this, all students will be asked to help support the Foundation by soliciting pledges from family and friends.  Stay tuned, more information will follow soon announcing our goal and the prizes you are eligible to win for your efforts!
The ultimate goal of the NCSF is to help as many of you as possible with financial assistance for your undergraduate education.  If you are a senior and are planning on enrolling as a full-time student in a college or university (including technical and vocational schools), you may apply. Eligible students may qualify to receive aid for a maximum of four undergraduate years. Each applicant’s financial status is assessed by the College Scholarship Service. The basis for the Foundation’s decision is the information reported on the financial aid form and analyzed by the Service. The Foundation is using the same data that colleges employ in making their awards.  All decisions are based solely on need alone.
For more information on how you may apply for a scholarship, please visit the new NCSF website at http://www.nchs-sf.org.  Please be aware that applications must be submitted by May 5th.  If you need further information or have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact your school counselor or Mrs. Granite in the Guidance Department.

Department News:

English Department News:
This week has been quiet for the English Department.  Many juniors classes are putting their finishing touches on the final drafts of their research papers, while seniors in AP Lit are busy preparing for their midterm.

The week of December 22nd the English Department participated in a school-wide commemoration of a bench in honor of Kelly Devine, our school reading specialists who passed away in April 2016.  The bench was a generous gift from the PFA, and sits in front of the newly planted gardens by the flagpole.

Math Department News:
M4 Algebra 2 students investigated how many radians it takes to go around an entire circle with pipe cleaners, scissors and paper circles.  They then made a color coded Unit Circle to help memorize.

In AP Calculus AB, students approximated the shaded area underneath a curve by drawing multiple rectangles and calculating the resulting areas. We discussed the difference between overestimations and underestimations. We found by drawing more rectangles we were able to find a better approximation and that the limit as the number approached infinity is equal to the area under the curve.
The NCHS Math Team participated in their 4th match this past Wednesday.  The team performed well and currently sit in 9th place out of 26 teams.
The American Mathematics Competition will take place on Tuesday, February 9, 2017 in the NCHS Auxiliary Gym.  The AMC 10 and AMC 12 are both 25-question, 75-minute, multiple choice examinations in high school mathematics designed to promote the development and enhancement of problem-solving skills.

CTE Department News:
Before the holiday break Ms. Zilly's Food & Nutrition classes were baking up a storm. The students competed in "The Great NCHS Sugar Cookie Challenge" creating delicious and decorative sugar cookies from their own recipes. One class paired up with Mrs. O'Connor's Architectural Design students to help bring their intricate home designs to life in the form of gingerbread. It was a lot of work and a lot of fun.... We can't to see if next year's students will be able to top these amazing designs!

Students in Mrs. Sapienza’s Child Development course created healthy, safe, and fun snacks for toddlers for a unit on preventing choking and first aid. Their snacks had to meet the criteria of a safe food that inhibits the possibility of choking in a very young child and be fun and appetizing.

The chefs in Mrs. Sapienza's Culinary class prepared their last menu for Rams Cafe. Lauren Canet and Tim Scranton are putting the finishing touches on their individual chicken pot pies.
